"Glad I could help you out. Not very often anybody gets good news anymore, but I'll still keep an eye out just in case I'm wrong." Mako replied wishing that he could get good news like that just once, not that he would harbour any ill-will towards those lucky enough to find loved ones.

Riza nodded, wishing there was something she could do for him in turn, but knowing that searching through the woods with him was the only thing she could offer right now. "Thank you," she said with sincerity.

"No problem. We have to help each other out as much as possible." Mako added sincerely, just because he was searching didn't mean he couldn't be helpful to others.

Riza smiled, "It's rare to meet people who think like that anymore," she admitted as she turned and fired into the creature that had been sneaking up behind her. "This forest has such strange beasts within it."

"I suppose Bolin and Korra have rubbed off on me. Even if I don't see them again at least I know I'm doing what they'd want me too." Mako answered knowing that thought would be the thing that would keep him on the right path.

Riza turned back to him, "Korra? You haven't mentioned them before," she asked as she surveyed the path before them keeping a wary lookout.

"She was my girlfriend, but we had a falling out right before this whole disaster happened." Mako explained quickly. "I still care about her too, but I know she can take care of herself better then Bolin at least." He added not knowing why he had felt the need to explain, but Riza seemed trustworthy at least.

Riza smiled at his description of her, "She certainly sounds interesting," she responded. "Bolin can't take care of himself?" she asked at the last part of his statement.

"Well he has this bad habit of getting himself into stupid situations. Not that he can't fight, but he can be naive about things, and is a little too trusting." Mako explained remembering some of the things that had annoyed him, but he loved those aspects at times too.

Riza nodded and brushed an errant spider off of her arm, it was difficult to avoid running into spider webs in the woods during the day time, and at night it was practically impossible. "Does he generally prefer to be around people?" she asked, wondering if they should search the town next.

"Yeah he does. Likes the attention, probably because we always looked down on or ignored on the streets. I handled it better, don't mind being on my own as much." Mako stated knowing that he would have to search the town sooner or later. "Looks like the end of the forest is coming up." He stated not knowing how long they had been walking, but it looked like the trees were starting to thin out a bit.

Riza nodded, "Hopefully you won't have to deal with that as much anymore... we're almost all homeless now," she added quietly before looking up and seeing the light of the stars through the leaves, "The canopy's thinning out too," she noted as she made her way forward.

"Yeah, it is I thought I noticed that awhile ago. Didn't think to mention it though. Yeah being homeless isn't going to get anybody looked down at now, though there are still people who are going to think they're better then others. Not even the end of the world is going to change that." Mako stated voicing his thoughts.

Riza nodded her agreement and looked up at the clear sky, once they'd made their way out of the forest, "You're right about that," she commented as she remembered the sexist asses she'd met since the apocalypse who'd still been just as nasty as those she'd met in the army.

"Sounds like you've run into a few of them then? Considering your military experience, I'm assuming they learned a lesson real quick." Mako added making an assumption based on the way Riza carried herself that she wouldn't take anybody's crap.

Riza gave him a brief smile, "If they made themselves too much of nuisance, they absolutely did. But most of them weren't worth wasting my time on," she added with a shrug. If she took the time to deal with every sexist asshole that came her way, she'd never get any sleep.

Mako couldn't help but chuckle a bit at that one. "Well glad to meet somebody who can handle themselves. I tend to worry about people who don't seem like can. I suppose you're going to want to part ways soon though. Now that we're out of the forest?" He asked not that he hadn't been grateful for the company of course, he just didn't want to prevent her from looking for her own loved ones.

Riza looked up at him, "Trust me when I tell you, there's absolutely no need for you to worry about me," she replied with a wry smile before turning and looking towards the town, "Do you have someplace you're currently staying? I can at the very least walk you there so you're not out late at night by yourself."

"Good to know." He replied with a smirk and a light chuckle. "Just a run-down warehouse it's not too far from here actually." Mako replied taking the lead and walking to the left down one of the streets. Funny how he was back to living in broken down places again after everything, but in a way it was comforting to have something familiar in the world still.

Riza nodded and followed him. She kept a tight grip on her pistol as walked down the streets keeping an eye out for any bandits or looters who occasionally got violent. She knew he could wield flame, but she didn't want blood on this young boy's hands if she could prevent it.

Mako tensed suddenly as he heard the unmistakable sounds of approaching footsteps. It was probably the same group he had seen a few days ago.

Riza pulled out her gun and stepped in between Mako and the people approaching them, "Make your way to your warehouse. I'll meet up with you in a bit," she ordered in a low voice. She wouldn't allow him to face danger if these individuals turned out to be antagonistic.

"No way! I'm not letting you deal with them alone. Besides these guys have been stealing my supplies for a few days now. I intead to show them that they shouldn't mess with me." Mako replied his stubbornness and hot-headedness showing through. The only reason he hadn't done anything about it before was due to his mind being occupied with his search for Bolin. Now that his hope was starting to dim it left room for his other emotions to start coming to the surface.
The leader of the group had apparently already spotted them anyway. He seemed to be in his mid or late thirties with a tall and muscular build. Followed by three of his smaller lackies. "Looky here boys. Found ourselves a lovely lady and a little brat!" The man guffawed not having noticed right away that Riza was armed.

Riza took one more glance at Mako, and could tell from the look in his eyes that he wasn't backing down. She shook her head and sighed, "Alright, but stay behind me and don't do anything rash. I'm a trained soldier. You're just a civilian, so stay back." She used the exact same chilling tone she used on the young and rowdy recruits in the army who thought they were invincible and didn't have to take orders from a woman.
She raised her gun into plain sight, "I highly suggest you turn around right now and leave. We don't want any trouble," she stated clearly and calmly. Only fools deliberately picked fights when they were outnumbered and though she was fairly confident she could handle them if she had to, she'd rather not have to waste the ammo it might require.

Mako nodded although reluctant about it he stepped back he knew how to listen when necessary, and now seemed like a good time to listen. The firebender waited for them to make a move totally prepared and ready to defend himself and Riza if it came to that.
"Well lady if you don't want trouble I suggest you leave. This area is ours, we've laid claim to it. Something that brat obviously doesn't understand." The man added shooting Mako a threat filled glare causing the teenager to clench his fists. "This isn't yours anymore then mine. What's the point of claiming anything?" He asked his tone cold.

Riza glanced back at him, "Is there any particular reason you need access to this area?" she asked quietly, making sure no one other than Mako could hear her. "I'm not saying they're right, but if we can get out of this situation without fighting, that might be ideal." If he needed her to, she would stand firm and defend him, but she would prefer not having to fight at all.
